The Importance of Local Government
There is a great deal to be said about how our government systems work from the federal, state, county, and city levels. Much focus is given to the federal government and its impact on our daily lives due to the sensational nature of national and or global politics. It's important to note that no federal system in my opinion can stand on top of inferior local government structures. I would even go a step further to say that the foundation upon which the city municipality stands is the family. The family and its general health and structure determine a great deal about the condition of society and the many issues having to be regulated by the government. An idea that I've heard bantered about recently is that of home rule and its need and or importance. What is it, and how do we maintain it? The simple explanation is that its governance of an area by its own citizens and this is why local government and governance is so important. How do we achieve it? We achieve this by listening to one another, communicating clearly what the needs within our community are and by working directly with all stakeholders to achieve those outcomes that create the best results for most people as possible. Conversations must be continuous. Listening and adjusting expectations where it is possible based on the information shared. Please understand that while local politicians should actively engage and appropriately respond to their constituency, the people should respond in trust and confidence in their leaders to do what is best for the community, that is by the way the very definition of a republic. That is who we are. We have never been a democracy. Leadership should educate all stakeholders as to the rationale for their decisions and of course if the people still disagree, they must vote their leader out and replace them. It's truly remarkable that we in America can transition power in peace even in the most contentious times. So support your local government. Engage, ask questions, support those in office, listen, and vote.
